We’re Not Passionate About B Corp Certification

Here’s something that may surprise you - The Impact Collective isn’t passionate about B Corp certification.I know - why the focus on B Corps then? If not B Corp, then what are we passionate about? We are passionate about solving problems for purpose-driven organizations. And there is one problem we have seen over and over again throughout our careers and with the clients we work with (both certified B Corps and organizations who are B Corp curious). The problem? CSR, Social Impact, Doing Good, Sustainability - too often it is siloed in purpose-driven companies. Either one person or one team (the CSR team, the Social Impact team, B Keepers, etc.) is generally in charge of the social impact initiatives and the rest of the organization doesn’t really understand how their day to day is making an impact. The Impact Collective recently hosted a webinar series titled “Beyond B Corp: Operationalizing Your Values” addressing this very problem. Check out last month’s blog post for a summary of what we learned. So - WHY? Why are we taking the time to bring this to you (did I mention the webinar was FREE?) Why is this so important to us? And more importantly, why are we the best people to solve this problem?I have a unique perspective on the problem, having started my career as a CPA, then MBA, then Social Impact Strategist. As a CPA, as you can imagine, everything was about making more money for people who already had enough. I needed to do something more in line with my values. And I knew I could use those skills to do good in the world. Then I started working as an accountant for mission-driven companies who said they were committed to doing good. But I realized that the “doing good” was just a part of their messaging, or lived with one department. I never felt connected to the impact. I saw that most people at the company were disengaged, and never really understood how their role was making an impact. That’s when I decided to earn my MBA in social innovation. That’s where I learned about B Corp, and had an “aha moment” where I realized I could use all my skills in finance/business/operations to do good in the world. But I was still surprised to find that many B Corps also siloed their impact initiatives with one person or one department. We hear this from our clients and fellow B Corp community members all the time. So my business partner, Sarah (who I met in the MBA program), and I set out to solve that problem. We help companies make sure every person at every level of their organization is a part of their impact journey.Sound familiar? Is this a problem you’re seeing in your organization too? Drop us a note or book a time with us here so we can chat about ways we have solved this for our clients and for ourselves. Because everyone at your purpose-driven organization IS having an impact - they just need to understand how.
